Although this year yielded a record number of entries, the judges felt only two warranted
scholarship awards and neither of these were of first place caliber.  Prospective entrants for
next year, 2010, should be advised that proofreading is essential, as is grammar.  Moreover, a
synopsis or book report is not desired; nor is flattery of the novel; don't base an essay on sound
bites from the web page.  And, most importantly, if an opinion is stated, use specific examples
from the novel to support your assertion.  In keeping with the stated desire to identify and
recognize outstanding high school students, the $750 not awarded for 2009 will be added to
2010's first place, making it $1750.
Second Place  $750.00 Scholarship
Third Place  $500.00 Scholarship
