The translator wishes to direct the reader to two invaluable sources that
aided this endeavor:  John Keegan’s,
A History of Warfare, New York,
Alfred A. Knopf, 1993, 432 pages and George Ryley Scott’s,
A History of
Torture
, first published London, T. Werner Laurie, 1940, reprinted
London, Senate Studio Editions Ltd, 1995, 328 pages.  With regard to the
latter, it is bewildering to think that the very methods that the author was
cataloguing, remote and antiquated in their presentation, were in those
very years of manuscript preparation and the first years of publication in
active use by various megalomaniacs; and his very premise was the
evolution of society so as to arise above the need for torture!

The translator further wishes to extend love and thanks to J.H. Solomon
for her meticulous editing and is especially delighted that she continues to
speak to him after completion of her job.  The perusal and informative
discussions of the manuscript by L.K. Solomon, I.H.S. Solomon & B.C.
Solomon were also most helpful.
